Manipal Hospital Dhakuria hosted a training session for the Gariahat Hawkers on the hospital grounds on the eve of Emergency Day, which falls on Hawkers Day. Dr. Pradip Bhowmik, a consultant cardiologist at Manipal Hospital in Dhakuria, discussed the signs of heart conditions and emphasised the importance of early detection. The hospital’s skilled nursing staff instructed about 40 hawkers in CPR.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, is an emergency procedure used when a person’s breathing or heartbeat stops. One of the most important skills that can save lives during a cardiac arrest is CPR training. For a comprehensive understanding of CPR, the nursing staff used mannequins and volunteers to demonstrate the training.

Dr. Pradip Bhowmik, Consultant Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, said, “The key to lowering the risk of a heart attack is early diagnosis. After age 40, routine screening is essential. A healthy diet, moderate exercise, and abstaining from smoking and junk food are essential for heart health, and blood sugar and hypertension must be treated as soon as possible”.

Mr. Dilip Roy, Hospital Director, Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, said, “Since hawkers are an essential component of the city and delivery system, the greatest number of people must receive CPR training. Our goal is to educate and train the general public and all demographics in emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Our committed group of physicians, nurses, and staff members has been instrumental in delivering the CPR instruction today. We will carry on with this endeavour in the future”.

The participants were given their emergency kits and certificates of training completion as the 1.5-hour session came to an end.
