Policybazaar, one of India’s leading online insurance platforms, highlighted key trends in term insurance purchase behaviour across West Bengal at an exclusive press meet held in Kolkata, ahead of the Durga Puja celebrations. The event was chaired by Gaurav Surana, Regional Head (East), Life Insurance, Policybazaar.com, who shared key trends shaping a significant shift in consumer behavior, with an increasing awareness and adoption of term insurance.

“Kolkata, which is frequently hailed as India’s cultural center, is seeing a sharp increase in the use of high-value term insurance. Customers in the city and the state of West Bengal are emphasizing their families’ safety from life’s uncertainties and are growing more financially conscious. Purchases of term insurance have steadily increased as a result of this increased awareness. From policy comparison and discovery to purchase and claims support, we at Policybazaar are dedicated to helping our consumers every step of the way,” said Gaurav.

With a consistent annual increase in the number of policies bought, West Bengal has become a potential market for term insurance. With a significant contribution of 26% to the total policy count in FY 25, West Bengal has demonstrated especially strong progress.

West Bengal consumers are choosing larger coverage amounts in order to protect their families from unforeseen financial hardships. West Bengal has an average sum insured of about Rs 86.6 lakh, while Kolkata has a little higher average of Rs 96.7 lakh. This indicates an increasing awareness of long-term financial planning, even though it is still on the lower end of the spectrum.

80.1% of buyers in West Bengal were graduates or older; however, in FY 2024–2025, the percentage was even higher in Kolkata at 84.2%. Both of these numbers were higher than the national average of 78.6% of customers who are grads or older. West Bengal and Kolkata had larger percentages of policyholders who were salaried (74.8% and 79.2%, respectively) than the national average of 70.5%.

Customers who work for themselves also make up a larger percentage.

In Kolkata and West Bengal, purchasers under 40 make up a sizable section of the population.

Although male consumers still make up the majority, more women are starting to participate.

It can be quite difficult to handle a term insurance claim while you’re going through a tough emotional period.
