In Kolkata, where literature and spirituality have long had a sacred conversation, debut novelist Kartikeya Vajpai unveiled his book The Unbecoming, marking a significant event in the city’s literary calendar. The book launch, which took place in the City of Joy—known for its long-lasting intellectual ferment, contemplative customs, and respect for the written word—brought together a diverse group of authors, academics, and enthusiastic readers to delve deeply into the novel’s philosophical issues.

Published by Penguin Random House India, the unveiling at the renowned Oxford Bookstore was a private and reflective discussion between Kartikeya Vajpai and Jimmy Tangree, Head of 91.9 Friends FM. Mr. Barun Chanda, a seasoned actor and writer, also graced the event; his presence gave the evening more weight and literary relevance. In addition to reflecting the novel’s philosophical profundity, the debate evoked Kolkata’s enduring reputation as a hub for intellectual, religious, and literary expression.

The forewords of the book, written by Swami Sarvapriyananda and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, were cited during the evening as confirmations of the book’s intellectual and spiritual authority and place it within a living tradition of compassion and introspection.

“The Unbecoming is rooted in the understanding that much of our suffering comes from clinging to identities shaped by fear and expectation. It is essentially the only thing that restricts your personal freedom. Therefore, let go of your self-constructed image and the opinions that other people have of you by being careless and unthinking. Unbecoming is a subdued return, a call to let existence discover its meaning instead of forcing one upon it. In today’s world, introspection is crucial. It enables us to act clearly while being rooted in awareness and present,” said the author.

Kartikeya said, “Maya works through two forces: fear and greed. Both divert our focus. Detachment is the restoration of focus to reality rather than withdrawal”.

The book’s main themes—identity, inner clarity, purpose, and the process of unbecoming—were represented in the discussion that enthralled the audience. The conversation focused on the value of reflection in navigating a society that is becoming more restless while examining modern ambition, resiliency, and the pursuit of purpose. The audience’s focused participation in the discussion highlighted how relevant the topics were.

Siddharth, a renowned cricket player, and Ajay, the seasoned coach who influenced his path, have a developing connection at the heart of the reflective book The Unbecoming. Both are forced to face the weight of expectation, the fear of the unknown, and the illusions of identity as their long-standing guru-shishya tie is put to the test. The book explores the art of letting go of inherited identities and returning to one’s fundamental self by fusing narrative storytelling with philosophical inquiry and emotional reality.

The book is priced at Rs 399.
