An Important Holi Safety Advisory For Cancer Patients
Holi-2026

As the region prepares for the vibrant festivities of Holi, Manipal Hospital Rangapani, a premier unit of the Manipal Hospitals Group, has issued a critical health advisory. The hospital is urging patients currently undergoing radiation therapy, as well as those who have recently completed treatment, to exercise extreme caution to avoid severe skin and respiratory complications.

Medical experts warn that radiation therapy renders the treated skin exceptionally fragile and hypersensitive. The introduction of external chemicals—particularly those found in synthetic Holi colors—can lead to painful irritation or adverse dermatological reactions.

Key Safety Protocols for Patients

To ensure a safe celebration, the oncology department has outlined the following non-negotiable guidelines:

  • Strict Skin Protection: Patients are advised against applying any substance to the treated area other than prescribed ointments. If participating in the festival, colors should be used sparingly on non-treated areas, with a strong preference for natural, organic pigments over artificial dyes.
  • Respiratory Alert for Lung Cancer Patients: Those battling lung cancer or pre-existing conditions like COPD must avoid exposure to powdered colors. Inhaling these fine particles can trigger acute allergic reactions, exacerbate respiratory distress, and lead to further complications.
  • Dietary and Immune Vigilance: Because radiation and chemotherapy often leave the immune system compromised, patients must be cautious of food hygiene. Furthermore, the consumption of intoxicants—including alcohol and bhang—is strictly prohibited as they can severely impact recovery.

Dr. Prithwijit Moitra, Associate Consultant of Radiation Oncology at Manipal Hospital Rangapani, emphasized the long-term nature of post-radiation sensitivity.

“Even after the completion of treatment, the skin and underlying tissues remain vulnerable for a significant period. During Holi, patients must avoid chemical-based colors and, crucially, refrain from vigorous scrubbing to remove stains. For our lung cancer patients, avoiding powdered clouds is essential to prevent respiratory setbacks. While the festival is a time for joy, safety and moderation are the priorities,” said Dr. Moitra.

Manipal Hospital Siliguri, Rangapani, strongly encourages all patients and their caregivers to consult their treating oncologist before participating in any festive activities. A personalized medical assessment is the best way to ensure that the “Festival of Colors” remains a safe and healthy experience for those on the path to recovery.
