Great Focus On Darjeeling’s Small Tea Producers With Makaibari Collective

One of India’s heritage tea estates, Makaibari, announced the establishment of Makaibari Collective, a new project aimed at improving the standard of living for small-scale organic tea producers in Darjeeling and creating a more robust future for the tea industry in the area.
Under the Makaibari brand, the Collective combines organically grown tea from small farmer cooperatives throughout Darjeeling. Crucially, these growers won’t have to start from scratch when creating a market. Under the new Collective, Makaibari will combine its well-known Apoorva and Green Valley tea lines, which together account for a market worth over Rs 10 crore.
This gives small growers access to a market that is already established, a customer base that is already established, and distribution channels that have been shown to work from the start.
Large, historic estates are not the only part of Darjeeling’s tea story. Additionally, it depends on thousands of small farmers and farming communities, whose plots, expertise, and organic farming methods play a significant role in the agricultural landscape of the area.
However, because they produce on a much smaller scale and have less access to premium markets, high-quality infrastructure, branding, and bargaining power, small growers frequently face a fundamental disadvantage. Because of this, the value that Darjeeling tea creates does not always return to its growers in an equitable manner.
This gap is intended to be filled by the Makaibari Collective.
The Collective unites small growers, provides them with access to Makaibari’s well-established market infrastructure, and establishes a way for them to share in the value created by the final product, as opposed to asking them to compete independently in an increasingly challenging market.
In this way, the Collective aims to support Darjeeling tea’s broader social, economic, and ecological ecosystem in addition to individual farmers.
Customers will be able to participate in a model where the success of the product is more closely linked to the communities that produce it, while the Collective will provide teas with the quality and provenance associated with Makaibari.
In order to preserve the estate’s standing in the luxury tea market, Makaibari will keep producing, exporting, and distributing its current line of upscale, estate-grown teas through upscale retail channels.
Starting with Diwali 2026, the Makaibari Collective will position the initiative to enter the significant festive gift-giving season while building toward consistent, year-round demand.
This is a continuation of Makaibari’s long-standing dedication to Darjeeling and its farming communities. It presents a new opportunity for the area: Darjeeling tea’s future can be built not only by safeguarding its legacy but also by establishing more robust, equitable, and sustainable economic opportunities for the small growers who are a vital component of that legacy.
