While Kolkata’s vibrant community pujas capture global headlines, some of the city’s most profound historical treasures remain hidden within private ancestral courtyards. Among these is the revered Raja Baidyanath Mallick Durga Puja, a tradition spanning over four centuries and steeped in royal heritage.

The history of the presiding deity is as dramatic as it is sacred. The idol was originally worshipped by Raja Man Singh I of Amer, Rajasthan. According to family lore, when Emperor Akbar desired to claim the deity, the courageous head priest intervened, rescuing the sacred idol and journeying east to Kolkata in 1613.

Today, this incredible legacy is carefully preserved by the Mallick family. This year’s sacred rituals were conducted under the complete supervision of Shyamali Mallick, the esteemed head of the family and pishi dida of acclaimed musician Sayan Ganguly. Also gracing the occasion was Sayan Ganguly’s wife, Indira Dhar, who is an eminent director.

Despite the passage of four centuries, the family maintains the sanctity and authentic rituals of their royal roots. Unlike modern, theme-driven celebrations, this puja is a deeply personal and spiritual observance. The dhak beats echo with centuries of history, and every offering reflects an unbroken chain of devotion that survived imperial pursuit and the test of time.

For the Mallick family, the annual worship is much more than a festival—it is a living museum of faith. As generations pass, custodians like Shyamali Mallick ensure that the heritage brought from the palaces of Rajasthan continues to thrive in the heart of Kolkata, offering a rare glimpse into India’s rich, intertwined spiritual and royal past.
