COPD-Treatment

The introduction of Aerolife Mini TM, a next-generation pMDI enhancer, by Zydus Lifesciences Limited (“Zydus”), an innovation-led life sciences company with a global presence, is a major step in the company’s strategy to promote drug-device-led innovation in respiratory care. Being the first foldable and portable spacer in India, Aerolife MiniTM is incredibly practical. This device was introduced by Zydus under an exclusive licensing agreement with AeroDel Technology Innovations Pvt. Ltd.

Chronic respiratory conditions like asthma, bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are prevalent in India and are becoming more so due to several factors, including increased air pollution, smoking, recurrent infections, and delayed diagnosis. Long-term inhaled therapy is used by millions of patients to manage their symptoms, lessen exacerbations, and preserve their quality of life.

Effective drug delivery to the lungs is still a major obstacle, even though inhaled medications are still essential to treatment. According to real-world research, almost 94% of patients make at least one crucial mistake when using an inhaler, which leads to medication loss and diminished therapeutic benefit.

By lowering coordination errors, spacer devices are known to improve lung deposition of medications administered by pressurized metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs). Nonetheless, the spacer device market is still largely undifferentiated, with the majority of current models having large form factors that restrict daily portability. Repeated assembly requirements also raise the possibility of improper use and poor real-world adherence, especially outside the home. Despite their demonstrated clinical efficacy, conventional spacers are limited in their ability to provide consistent value at scale.

The compact, foldable, and ready-to-use design of Aerolife Mini TM completely changes the way spacers are used. Better drug deposition, increased compliance, increased patient confidence, and increased convenience are anticipated outcomes of the drug device.

This project is in line with Zydus’ long-term plan to use patient-centered pharmaceutical devices to create innovative, sustainable, and distinctive respiratory franchises.
