An Amazing Plantation Drive At Rabindra Sarobar By Kisaanka

Rabindra Sarobar, the famous National Lake in South Kolkata and one of the most beloved green areas in the city, commemorated World Environment Day 2026 with a unique plantation drive of fruit-bearing and flower-bearing trees, organized by Kisaanka by Shrestha Ganguly with assistance from KMDA.
World Environment Day 2026 is being observed worldwide on June 5th, with the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future”, emphasizing the critical need for global climate action under the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) #NowForClimate campaign.
Rabindra Sarobar, one of Kolkata’s lungs, is a vital biodiversity hotspot that supports native trees, migratory birds, and aquatic life. It covers more than 73 acres of lush greenery. The lake still serves as a hub for environmental projects, uniting local communities, environmental organizations, nature enthusiasts, and morning walkers.
The goal of Shrestha Ganguly’s environmental initiative, Kisaanka’s plantation drive, was to promote ecological restoration, expand green space, and motivate people to take an active role in building a more sustainable future. In order to improve biodiversity and raise awareness of environmental issues, the project entails planting fruit-bearing and flower-bearing saplings throughout the lake precincts.
MLA Swapan Dasgupta graced the occasion, emphasizing the value of teamwork in promoting sustainable development and environmental preservation.
The initiative was inspired by S. M. Ghosh, whose ongoing work greatly advances community involvement and environmental preservation in the Rabindra Sarobar area.
The plantation drive at Rabindra Sarobar served as a reminder that local action is the first step in preserving the environment and halting climate change, as the world unites to celebrate World Environment Day.
The first World Environment Day theme was “Only One Earth” in 1973, and Rabindra Sarobar is still a living example of that timeless message in Kolkata.
