Certain love stories are meant to end in separation rather than in union. Rabindranath Tagore creates a relationship in Sesher Kobita that finds meaning in letting go with grace rather than permanence. On May 2 at 6:00 PM at Gyan Manch in Kolkata, Two Dots Entertainment and SPC Kraft will present The Farewell Letter, a dramatized English reading that brings this very essence of love—introspective, layered, and liberating—to the stage.

This presentation, which is conceptually and staging-led by Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee, transcends traditional formats by reinterpreting one of Tagore’s most reflective works through performance, voice, and character interaction. The story, which is based on the characters’ emotional and intellectual journeys, examines a relationship that deliberately chooses individuality over convention and distance over domestication.

Sesher Kobita fundamentally questions conventional notions of marriage and love. It explores companionship as something very intimate and self-aware while challenging strict social norms in a sophisticated, intellectual setting. This very defiance—its capacity to portray love as understanding rather than possession—is what makes it relevant today.

Theater thespian Sohag Sen, renowned for her internationally acclaimed and inventive approach to theater, is the director of the English adaptation, which was inspired by the translation of Radha Chakravarty. This interpretation makes the text engaging for modern audiences by allowing it to be immediate and performative while maintaining the original’s philosophical depth and tonal sensitivity.

The work can also reach a larger audience by being presented in English, which makes Tagore’s multi-layered storytelling relatable to both non-Bengali viewers and the diaspora.

The cast consists of Shubhayan Sengupta, Solanki Roy, Anusha Viswanathan, Sohag Sen, and Debopriyo Mukherjee.

Kaushik Bose is in charge of lighting and stage design, while Sohag Sen is in charge of direction.

Storytellers Poulomi Bose and Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee will direct the story, and Sandipan Ganguly’s violin accompaniment will add a subtle musical element to the experience.

The Farewell Letter revisits Sesher Kobita as a reflection on choice, individuality, and the quiet strength it takes to let go. It does this by fusing literature, performance, and music.
