The Special Jury Award In Indian Language Films category was presented to Chhaad (The Terrace) at the 28^th KIFF. The film is directed by Indrani. This is her first feature film.

The Kolkata Mail correspondent caught up with Paoli Dam, who played the lead protagonist Mitra in the film in a telephonic conversation.

“No one knows the fate of the film. But when I signed the film, I knew that the film had different content. NFDC producing a film means that there was something different about the subject. Director Indrani had a clear intent when it came to Chhaad. She was clear from the beginning. She knew what the dialogues must be, what shots need to be taken, and other such nuances. She wanted organic characters. So we had script readings. Mitra, the protagonist is a writer and a teacher. She wanted the character to be organic. So we refrained from doing workshops. Even while shooting the film, I knew it was special. I am happy we could win such a prestigious award at the 28^th KIFF” said Paoli Dam.

Terrace is an integral part of Paoli’s life, not as an artist but also as a human being. “I check the verandah or the terrace when I visit a place. The openness and vastness are an integral part of my existence. When I heard the name of the film, it felt surreal to me. The terrace gives you a sense of freedom. My favorite corner of the house is the terrace” added the actress.

The actress talked about why she signed this film. “I really liked the concept of the film. It was unique in its own way. It talks about women’s empowerment in a subtle way. Mitra’s vulnerability and simplicity are what attracted me to this role. The protagonist’s story will resonate among the women and also among the men. As human beings, we need some space in our houses where we can be ourselves and express ourselves. Her decision at the end of the film makes her different. If one film after watching the film gets channelized or motivated, my job is done” said Paoli.
