Warriors Of Life- Focus On Cancer Journeys & Evolving Immunotherapy

Certain moments make every challenge worthwhile: a smile shared with family, a gathering with loved ones, a new morning, or a dream waiting to be lived. For people facing cancer, even these small moments can hold profound significance. Acknowledging the bravery behind these moments, Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre at Manipal Hospital, EM Bypass, gathered cancer survivors who have undergone immunotherapy, whose paths exemplify profound resilience, hope, and an unwavering determination to move forward. The special gathering, titled ‘ Warriors of Life’, was devoted to honoring their journeys, acknowledging meaningful moments, and gazing forward to the countless possibilities life offers.
At the core of the initiative was a simple yet compelling message: a cancer diagnosis may alter the direction of one’s life, but it doesn’t have to determine what comes after. For many patients, the experience of cancer goes well beyond diagnosis and treatment. It includes uncertainty, tough choices, emotional ups and downs, and the slow journey of rebuilding confidence, returning to normalcy, and cultivating empathy above all else. The Warriors of Life initiative aimed to recognize this broader journey, honoring those who keep finding reasons to smile, dream, connect, and look forward despite undergoing immunotherapy.
The event was graced by Dr. Sudeep Das, HOD & Senior Consultant– Medical Oncology; Dr. Pradip Kumar Mondal, Senior Consultant– Medical Oncology; Dr. Tanmay Banerjee, Director- Critical Care Medicine; Dr. Debdeep Samaddar, Associate Consultant- Medical Oncology; and Retired Prof. (Dr.) Kalyan Bhattacharya.
One major feature of the programme was a panel discussion titled Are We Close to a Cure for Cancer? Is Immunotherapy the Future? where doctors and patients collaborated, merging medical expertise with personal experience in the context of advancing cancer treatments and the impact of immunotherapy.
The meeting also underscored the growing role of immunotherapy in cancer care, a field that is now increasingly central to discussions on personalized and holistic cancer treatment. Immunotherapy enables the body’s immune system to identify and target cancer cells. For example, immune checkpoint inhibitors function by blocking signals that serve as ‘ brakes’ on immune cells, enabling those cells to mount a more robust response against cancer. These therapies are now applied to multiple types of cancer, and certain patients have seen significant, enduring responses.
The gathering emphasized the need to go beyond diagnosis and treatment to acknowledge survivorship, emotional well-being, family support, and the everyday moments that give life meaning. Warriors of Life” ultimately honored those who have experienced immunotherapy and persist in living, dreaming, connecting, and moving forward, reaffirming that although cancer may alter the trajectory of life, there can still be many fulfilling chapters ahead.
