What Caused The Delay In The Release Of The New Film The Calcutta Files?

The much-anticipated Bengali film The Calcutta Files, originally slated for a theatrical release on October 30, has been pushed back at the eleventh hour, sparking widespread speculation across Tollywood. To clear the air surrounding the sudden delay, director Souvik Dey has opened up about the compelling reasons behind postponing the premiere.
According to the director, the decision stems primarily from two major factors: persistent red tape and certification delays from the Censor Board, alongside a strategic move to avoid a box-office clash with the massive, high-budget Hindi epic Ramayana during the festive Diwali window.
Detailing the production hurdles, Director Souvik Dey said, “When we submitted the film to the Censor Board, everything was initially scheduled to proceed smoothly. After consulting with the team, we initially locked October 23, later moving it to the 30th. Unfortunately, unexpected complications with the Censor Board threw our timeline off track.”
Addressing the box-office competition, Dey added, “Another major reason is the impending release of a colossal Hindi film, Ramayana. I have no desire to pit our film against a production of that scale. When such a sensitive and thought-provoking subject goes up against a multi-billion-budget giant, there is no guarantee of securing proper showtimes or attracting the footfall it deserves. Therefore, we collectively decided to reschedule the release for November 20 to avoid any unnecessary risks.”
Centering on high-stakes political power struggles, systemic corruption, crime, betrayal, and the pursuit of justice, The Calcutta Files tackles deeply sensitive themes. One of the film’s standout highlights is a riveting performance by veteran actress Swagata Mukherjee, alongside an acclaimed ensemble cast featuring Gourab Roy Choudhury, Rajatava Dutta, and Laboni Sarkar.
Urging audiences to experience the film, the director concluded, “I request everyone to watch the film starting November 20. It will unearth many hidden truths and reveal realities that need to be told. If this film resonates with and receives support from the audience, I will be encouraged to bring even more hard-hitting truths to light.”
