The Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI), Kolkata, under the direction of Dr. Deep Das and his outstanding team, accomplished a historic first in pediatric neuro-interventional research. This discovery represents a paradigm shift in pediatric neuro-interventional care and could change the way children with complex neurological diseases are treated. It affirms that CMRI is a world leader in medical innovation and excellence because of its persistent dedication to cutting-edge methods and kind, patient-centered care.

The team’s historic success was treating a 2-year-old infant with an unruptured large cerebral aneurysm with the creative implantation of an intracranial flow diverter therapy. The kid, who had afebrile infantile seizures, underwent the endovascular treatment under general anesthesia for around ninety minutes. This procedure demonstrated the hospital’s dedication to state-of-the-art technology and minimally invasive techniques.

“Referred by Dr. GK Prusty, the child with convulsions underwent a CT scan, revealing a giant aneurysm 10 times larger than what we usually see in the Left middle cerebral artery. Following a thorough discussion with the family, we decided to work with pediatrician Dr. Ruchi Golash and the head of the anesthesiology department, Dr. Sailesh Kumar, to use a novel minimally invasive endovascular technique. We successfully addressed the risks of death, speech impairments, and temporary or permanent paralysis by implanting an endovascular flow diverter to control blood flow and stop blood from entering an aneurysm, which will cause the blood to shrink over time” said Dr. Deep Das, Consultant, Department of Neurology.

Dr. Das added, “This success story reflects the collaborative efforts of our medical team and advancements in the field, marking a milestone in pediatric neurovascular care. The process is unique for this indication, both in India and worldwide. The young patient’s lack of deficits following surgery attests to the effectiveness and accuracy of the medical staff. This discovery expands the range of treatments available for pediatric patients with neurovascular disorders and demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to innovation in healthcare”.

Their ongoing goal of providing the community with top-notch healthcare is reflected in the new benchmark in pediatric neurovascular care that Dr. Deep Das and the entire medical team have set.
