New Film Dakini Vidya Challenges Notions Of Black Magic

Kolkata witnessed a star-studded and culturally rich evening with the grand announcement of the upcoming Bengali feature film Dakini Vidya, directed by Sounab Nag and produced under the banner of Calcutta Films and Frames Entertainment LLP.
The grand event was graced by an esteemed ensemble of the film’s cast and notable figures from the industry, including Rishav Basu, Paayel Sarker, Shahebb Chattopadhyay, Sritama Dey, Biswarup Biswas, Pradip Dhar, Amitabh Bhattacharjee, Sreetama Baidya, and Satadeep Saha, among many others.

The title Dakini Vidya immediately evokes notions of black magic, occult practices, and dark rituals associated with malevolent occultism. Director Sounab Nag aims to challenge these preconceived notions. Traditionally linked with terms like maran, uchatan, and vashikaran—often exploited by dishonest individuals for selfish gains—the film delves deeper into the true essence of Tantra. Far from being merely a tool for destruction, true Tantra is portrayed as the divine union of compassion (karuna) and wisdom (prajna). The narrative explores whether Tantra inevitably leads to doom or if it holds the capacity for spiritual and physical healing.
Moving beyond the occult, Dakini Vidya is a multifaceted cinematic journey blending fear, drama, action, and vibrant song-and-dance sequences with a profound philosophy of life and revenge. The film unfolds against the breathtaking, awe-inspiring backdrop of the Sundarbans. Amidst the lush greenery, gentle breezes through Sundari trees, and tranquil boat rides under setting suns, a pure and innocent romance blossoms between the characters. However, the narrative masterfully contrasts this serene beauty with the menacing reality of the deep jungles—where winding roots, narrow rivulets, and river dams turn terrifying by nightfall. The chilling nocturnal silence and howling winds become living characters in their own right, heightening the suspense.

The film boasts a power-packed ensemble cast bringing these complex characters to life, featuring Paayel Sarkar, Biswarup Biswas, Rishav Basu, Shahebb Chattopadhyay, Amitabh Bhattacharjee, Parijat Chowdhury, Sreetama Baidya, Sritama Dey, Arunav Dey, Satadeep Saha, Pradip Dhar, Paramita Mukherjee, and Anirban Sikdar.
As the characters become inexplicably entangled with the mystic arts, Dakini Vidya promises to answer gripping questions about the identities of the Dakinis, Yakshinis, and Karnapishachinis, the consequences of acquiring such secret lore, and how esoteric practices dictate everyday human lives. Blending romance, suspense, and raw human emotion, Dakini Vidya is poised to offer Bengali cinema audiences a thrilling and thought-provoking cinematic experience.
