Suman Maitra’s next film Aami O Apu is a modern interpretation of Bibhutibhusan Bandopadhyay’s famous novel Pather Pachali. The film will also see a new take on writings of Jasimuddin, Jibanananda Das and Rabindranath Tagore.

“Pather Pachali is an emotion of Bengalis. Apu-Dugga has been reinterpreted in the film and presented in a modern way. The setting is the same- the villages of Bengal” said the director.

The film has been shot keeping in mind the different seasons. The director mentioned that they shot the different seasons during the actual seasons and hence the film took about a year to be shot.

Suman Maitra did not want any comparison with Ray’s Apu. So he tried very hard to find Apu which will match with the description of the film. Not many of us have seen a Rakhal. Hence he took pains to search for a boy who will match the description. A boy named Ishan Rana has played the role of Apu in the film.

Dugga’s character will be played by Prakriti Pujari.

Soumitra Ghosh, Ananda Choudhuri, Amrita Halder, Sushil Sikaria, Dhruba Debnath and others will be seen in important roles in the film.

The DOP of the film is Smriti.

Bappaditya Subhro has composed the music of the film. “The music director has composed a wonderful background score. He has reinterpreted the same old tune of the flute and presented it in a new manner. That will indeed be very pleasing for the ears” added Suman Maitra.

The director is still planning when to release the film. However he is busy with designing a different kind of promotion for the film.
