The National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) has received the esteemed CIMUSET Award for its innovative climate change gallery, “On The Edge?” which was created at NCSM’s Science City in Kolkata. The announcement of the award on November 15, 2025, during the CIMUSET award event held during the 27th ICOM General Conference in Dubai, was a momentous occasion for the Indian science museum community.

The CIMUSET Award recognizes exceptional science and technology museums and facilities that promote equity, inclusivity, and sustainability in society. It honors creative projects that exemplify modern museum values and hybrid methods and is based on the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. The award, which is supported by ICOM, honors organizations that transcend conventional borders to promote lifelong learning, shared history, and community involvement.

Science City, Kolkata, a division of the National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, is pleased to introduce “On the Edge?” a climate change permanent exhibition that reflects the values of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and is in line with international sustainability objectives.

“On the Edge? is a compelling example of what science museums can accomplish when they take their social responsibilities seriously. The initiative uses a remarkable blend of scientific rigor, community involvement, and true inclusivity to address the urgency of climate change. On the Edge? demonstrates how science museums can inspire people to envision and create more sustainable futures by acting as change agents. This is precisely the kind of aspirational, socially conscious work that the CIMUSET Award aims to honor,” said Jacob Thorek Jensen, CIMUSET Award Committee Chair.

Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Hon’ble Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Government of India, officially opened the gallery earlier this year on January 11, 2025. Over a million people have visited this facility since then. In order to effectively communicate climate impacts, underlying causes, and practical solutions, their 10,000-square-foot gallery incorporates immersive exhibitions, AR/VR experiences, and an interactive LED wall. This encourages visitors, particularly young people, to take part in collective climate action.
