The first ankle replacement surgery in Eastern India was successfully completed on July 19, 2026, on 33-year-old Mr. Saswata Kundu from Bolpur, Birbhum, according to a press conference held in Kolkata by JBCH, a renowned orthopedic and multispecialty hospital. Dr. Joydeep Banerjee Chowdhury, Dr. Soura Sekhar Saha, and Dr. Dipmalya Chakraborty, as well as members of the patient’s family, attended the press conference and discussed the patient’s 13-year medical journey, the difficult procedure, and his recuperation.

Thirteen years ago, Mr. Kundu was involved in an accident that resulted in a fracture to his left ankle, which required surgery. But as time went on, he developed post-traumatic arthritis in his ankle, which severely limited his mobility and gradually damaged the joint. His everyday life had been greatly impacted by his growing difficulty walking correctly.

Mr. Kundu sought specialized treatment at JBCH after enduring the illness for thirteen years. The medical team concluded that ankle replacement surgery was the best course of action for his advanced ankle condition after conducting a thorough clinical evaluation.

On July 19, 2026, Dr. Soura Sekhar Saha, MBBS, MS (Ortho), MRCS (EDIN), Clinical Fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery (NUH Singapore), completed the procedure. In Eastern India, the procedure represented a major advancement in specialized foot and ankle surgery.

Dr. Soura Sekhar Saha said, “For nearly 13 years, Mr. Saswata had to deal with the fallout from an ankle injury. Due to the prior trauma, he developed post-traumatic arthritis, which gradually impaired his ankle function and made walking more challenging. Ankle replacement is a technically challenging procedure that calls for specialized knowledge and careful patient selection. Our goals in his case were to help him regain greater mobility, alleviate his symptoms, and restore ankle function. We are happy with his recuperation and the advancements he has made since the procedure”.

After years of struggles due to his injured ankle, Mr. Kundu is now doing well and has demonstrated a notable improvement in his mobility following the surgery and recuperation.

A significant turning point in Mr. Kundu’s journey from a traumatic ankle injury 13 years ago to a successful ankle replacement and recovery was marked by the press conference, which brought together the treating physicians and his family.
