National Award-winning filmmaker Ram Kamal Mukherjee has revealed his upcoming Hindi feature film, Sister Nibedita, which is based on the life of one of India’s most significant spiritual and social icons. This comes after a remarkable body of work that has continuously celebrated inspirational personalities and untold stories.

The film, which is being produced by Aritra Das Creation in collaboration with Assorted Motion Pictures, will follow Sister Nivedita, an Irish-born follower of Swami Vivekananda who devoted her life to serving India.

Sister Nivedita, who was born Margaret Elizabeth Noble in Ireland, abandoned the comforts of her native country to embrace India as her spiritual home. She became a trailblazing figure whose contributions continue to inspire generations through her unwavering work in education, women’s empowerment, social reform, and nation-building.

The upcoming biographical drama will follow Nivedita’s journey from a young Irish teacher to an ardent supporter of India’s spiritual and cultural awakening. The film will examine her strong relationship with Swami Vivekananda, her dedication to social service, and her role in forming a national consciousness during a critical period in the nation’s history, all against the backdrop of a rapidly changing India.

Director Ram Kamal Mukherjee said, “Sister Nivedita, for example, was a story waiting to be told. I have always thought Celina would be Margaret’s best option. I read books about Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna while creating Binodiini. At that point, I learned about Sister Nivedita’s amazing journey. After reading her story again, I made the decision to turn it into a film. Celina is my leading lady, and I’m happy that she can relate to the suffering and fervor of a woman’s selflessness.”.

Bollywood actor Celina Vikram Jaitly said, “Some journeys are chosen by the actor, while others are chosen by the actor in some way. The last time I had the privilege of collaborating with filmmaker Ram Kamal Mukherjee was for Season’s Greetings. After nearly four years, I never thought our paths would cross for a story with such deep spiritual meaning. As a little girl, I wandered through the peaceful grounds of Sister Nivedita’s last home in Darjeeling, never knowing that one day I would be entrusted with bringing Margaret Noble’s extraordinary life to audiences around the world. With the blessings of Ramakrishna Mission and Swami Vivekananda, I make a sacred vow to devote all of my heart and soul to playing Sister Nivedita”.

The makers have added significance to the announcement by revealing that Sister Nivedita’s first look was unveiled on July 4, which is Swami Vivekananda’s 124th Mahasamadhi anniversary. The date has deep spiritual meaning and honors the enduring relationship between Swami Vivekananda and his loyal follower, Sister Nivedita, whose life was irrevocably changed by his teachings and vision.

With extensive filming in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Ireland, the film is intended to be an ambitious international production that captures the emotional and geographical landscape that shaped Sister Nivedita’s remarkable life journey. The movie attempts to accurately depict the world she lived in and the legacy she contributed to, from her early years in Ireland to her pivotal years in India.

Mukherjee contributes his distinctive sensitivity and historical perspective to the project. He is well-known for his subtle storytelling and critically acclaimed biographical works. The movie honors Sister Nivedita’s lasting legacy as a teacher, reformer, nationalist, and spiritual seeker while shedding light on the lesser-known aspects of her life.

Sister Nibedita is expected to be an engaging cinematic experience that connects spirituality, history, and human resiliency, with substantial research already in progress.

After Binodiini Ekti Natir Upakhyan, the director teams up with musical duo Sourendra-Soumyajit, and Ipsita Acharya wrote the screenplay and story.

The cast and important creative partners are currently being finalized by the producers.
