Actress Avery Singha Roy plays the role of a police constable in the upcoming web series Debi. The Kolkata Mail correspondent Priyanka Dutta caught up with the actress in an exclusive conversation about this role. Excerpts..

Your latest role as a police constable has generated a lot of buzz. How did you approach a character that feels so different from your previous work?

Avery Singha Roy: Thank you for having me. Honestly, I wanted to avoid the stereotypical portrayal of a police officer. When you play a professional role like this, it’s easy to fall into tropes. I wanted to bring a unique, personal interpretation to the character. I worked hard to integrate my own creative input, ensuring she felt like a real, layered person who happens to be navigating a complex investigation.

That sounds like a challenging balance. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned about succeeding in this industry while taking on such diverse roles?

Avery Singha Roy: The journey is never smooth. Success isn’t just about talent; it’s about immense hard work and, more importantly, the ability to listen. You have to be open to constructive criticism, even when it’s tough to hear. You also need the emotional fortitude to block out the naysayers. If you aren’t resilient, you won’t survive the highs and lows.

You mentioned the investigation aspect of the film. Can you tell us about your experience working with your co-stars?

Avery Singha Roy: It was a fantastic experience. Working with Sagorika-di, Arindam da, and Anirban da was a complete joy. Specifically, my chemistry with Anirban da—who plays the role of a very polite OC—is something I think the audience is really going to enjoy. You’ll definitely catch that dynamic in the trailer; it’s quite vibrant.

We heard reports that the filming conditions were quite demanding. What was that like for the team?

Avery Singha Roy: It was tough! We filmed in some very remote villages, and we were often battling extreme heat. But honestly? I never felt overwhelmed or stressed. The team was incredibly supportive. We were all in this together, and that camaraderie made the hard work feel rewarding. I have to extend a huge thank you to Klikk and Shantanu-da for their unwavering support and for trusting me with this character. It was a project that truly challenged me in the best possible way.
