In Kalinganagar, Odisha, Tata Steel successfully put India’s biggest blast furnace into service. The Phase II extension at Kalinganagar, which will cost Rs 27,000 crore, will increase the site’s capacity from 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 8 MTPA. Senior company executives were present as T. V. Narendran, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel, officially inaugurated the new facility.

The addition of the new blast furnace will greatly increase the plant’s overall production capacity, enabling Tata Steel to satisfy the expanding needs of many industries, including shipbuilding, infrastructure, automotive, and defense. Additionally, it will be advantageous in some fields including building, lifting and excavation, and oil and gas.

With the Phase II extension, Odisha has become Tata Steel’s most popular investment destination in India, with cumulative investments of more than Rs 100,000 crore over the last ten years.

With a 5,870 m3 capacity, the new blast furnace is outfitted with cutting-edge technology for extended campaign life and an environmentally friendly layout to maximize the steelmaking process. For the best specific fuel use in the production of hot metal, this blast furnace will use two preheating stoves in addition to four top combustion stoves—the first in India. To maximize energy recovery from by-product gas, a dry gas cleaning plant has been installed—a first for Tata Steel. A pellet plant, a coke plant, and a cold rolling mill are additional important buildings in Kalinganagar’s Phase II extension. All of these facilities use cutting-edge technology and environmentally friendly procedures. Modern technologies aimed at value-added goods, operating efficiency, and a large reduction in carbon footprint are incorporated into the brand-new, state-of-the-art steel mill.

The Kalinganagar plant plays a significant role in the socioeconomic advancement of the area and is more than just an industrial complex. Tata Steel has made substantial investments in livelihood, healthcare, and education-focused community development projects, which have benefited over 2 laresidents. The success of Tata Steel Kalinganagar is also profoundly based on its workers. Because of Tata Steel’s “Safety First” philosophy, which guarantees the highest safety standards are upheld, Kalinganagar is among the safest steel facilities in the nation and the globe.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) has selected Tata Steel Kalinganagar as its first Global Lighthouse, making it the first industrial facility in India. The Kalinganagar facility achieved a noteworthy milestone in its sustainability path in 2024 when it was awarded the renowned Responsible Steel TM Certification.
