Cochlear-Implants-and-Hearing-Disability

Hearing impairment is one of the commonest disabilities and poses a great risk in everyday life due to problems with speech recognition, communication, and language acquisition. It is noted that there is a lack of awareness among people about hearing impairment. The timely and proper intervention of cochlear implants can help patients lead a normal life.

Dr. Arjun Dasgupta, Consultant, Rhinologist ENT, Endoscopic Skull-based surgeon & Dr. Chirojit Dutta, Consultant, Laryngologist, ENT Head & Neck Surgeon highlighted how lack of awareness gives rise to denials. Unlike glasses, which become a style statement, a hearing device is yet to become acceptable in society. It is often considered a sign of disability. Such stigma can affect the patient’s morality and confidence and such notions are very common among adult patients.

The enriching session focussed on patients like Aahir Roy, an 8-year-old child, Sreyashi Mistry, a 13-year-old child, and Niranka Chatterjee, a young adult.

The price of cochlear implants ranges from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 18 lakhs.
