Robotic-Assisted Cardiac Surgery Now At BM Birla Heart Hospital

With the introduction of robotic-assisted cardiac surgery, CK Birla Hospitals‘ BM Birla Heart Hospital in Kolkata has solidified its standing as one of Eastern India’s premier facilities for complex and advanced cardiac care. The hospital’s leadership, the cardiac surgery team, and patients who had recently had the procedure were present at the press conference where the announcement was made. Over the past ten years, cardiac surgery has seen tremendous technological advancements, with robotic-assisted procedures emerging as one of the most significant developments in minimally invasive heart care.
In contrast to traditional open heart surgery, robotic-assisted cardiac surgery uses high-definition three-dimensional visualization and robotic instruments controlled by the surgeon to perform the procedure through tiny incisions. The technology is becoming more and more popular all over the world due to its potential advantages for patients. Robotic-assisted cardiac surgery can reduce surgical trauma, minimize blood loss, reduce post-operative pain, lower the risk of wound-related complications, and facilitate a quicker recovery by avoiding large chest incisions in certain cases.
Compared to traditional surgical methods, patients frequently have shorter hospital stays and an earlier return to their regular daily activities. From the surgeons’ point of view, the technology provides improved dexterity and precision, enabling them to work with remarkable accuracy in small areas.
Dr. Soumya Guha, Robotic Cardiac Surgeon, BM Birla Heart Hospital, who has carried out robotic cardiac surgery, said, “The visualization and instrument control that robotic assistance provides changes what is technically achievable, particularly in cases where the operative anatomy is complex, and the space available is limited. In every case that has been finished thus far, the results have been in line with what the technology is intended to provide, and the recuperation process for the patient has been significantly different from that of open surgery”.

Dr. Manoj Daga, Director, Cardiac Surgery, BM Birla Heart Hospital, said, “Cardiac disease is a major problem in Eastern India, and patients in this area have traditionally had to travel long distances for procedures that call for sophisticated surgical infrastructure. This level of care is now offered here thanks to the addition of robotic cardiac surgery to our program. This is a significant step toward our goal of developing a comprehensive cardiac surgery program that can manage the most complicated cases while enhancing accuracy, recuperation, and overall patient outcomes”.
By introducing robotic-assisted cardiac surgery, BM Birla Heart Hospital hopes to further solidify its position as a regional referral center for intricate cardiac procedures, providing patients in Eastern India with more convenient access to surgical technologies that are benchmarked globally.
